Home/Non-Surgical Enhancement/Cosmetic Injectables and Facial Fillers/XEOMIN®

XEOMIN® is a FDA-approved frown line treatment offering a uniquely purified form of wrinkle reduction compared to other anti-aging injectables. Developed by Merz Aesthetics®, XEOMIN® is designed without unnecessary proteins so patients can enjoy a noticeable and powerful improvement in the appearance of their frown lines (glabellar wrinkles). If these “eleven” wrinkles are causing you to look aged or stressed, XEOMIN® can relax the small muscles responsible for wrinkle formation. Upon injection, XEOMIN® temporarily prevents overactive facial muscles from contracting, resulting in a visible softening of moderate to deep frown lines.

XEOMIN® vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic

XEOMIN® and BOTOX® Cosmetic have many similarities — the injectables are designed to treat dynamic wrinkles (lines that develop when the face is in motion) and both share the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. However, XEOMIN® is distinguished by its unique manufacturing process, which does not utilize unnecessary proteins or protein additives. As a result, the purified structure of XEOMIN® is believed to produce less antibody resistance when compared to similar injectables. In clinical studies, the results of XEOMIN® were also noticeable relatively quicker when compared to individuals who received treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic. That said, both treatment options were shown to have comparable effectiveness months after injections. Board-certified plastic surgeon Wesley Schooler, MD or our experienced aesthetic nurse injector can advise you on the pros and cons of each, and advise you on the best wrinkle reduction treatment for your needs.

How are XEOMIN® Injections Performed?

At Santa Barbara Plastic Surgery Center, treatment with XEOMIN® can be performed by our physician or nurse practitioner. Anesthesia is usually not necessary; however, a topical numbing agent can be applied prior to injections if desired. XEOMIN® is meticulously delivered to the targeted facial muscles with a small needle. Patients generally report only mild discomfort, if any, during this process and injections only last 20 to 25 minutes in most cases. After treatment, an ice pack or over-the-counter pain medication can help alleviate swelling and/or discomfort. There is no downtime necessary after injections and patients can resume their day as normal.

What Can I Expect From the Results of XEOMIN®?

The smoothing effects of XEOMIN® are usually visible around three to four days after injections and should improve even more with time. The rejuvenation achieved after 30 days can be considered the full outcome of treatment. The wrinkle reduction seen with XEOMIN® can last as long as three to four months, which is comparable to the results achieved with BOTOX® Cosmetic and other neuromodulating injectables. Occasional touch-up treatments can be an effective way to preserve the youthful aesthetic attained with XEOMIN®.

How Much Does XEOMIN® Cost?

The cost of XEOMIN® is usually priced per unit, so your personalized quote will be determined by the amount of product necessary to achieve your goals. Other factors that can influence the cost of treatment include:
