The confidence of having smooth, beautiful skin is unmatched. Given the different types of exposure that the face endures throughout the years—such as sun damage, pollutants, and gravity—it is no surprise that patients in Santa Barbara and beyond often pursue non-surgical cosmetic treatments to repair skin damage and preserve a healthy complexion. Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or more commonly known as PRP, is an innovative skin renewal treatment designed to foster the growth of newer, healthier skin using the healing components of your own blood. Our nurse, Giana, performs PRP therapy at Santa Barbara Plastic Surgery Center.
What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a component of your blood that is abundant in natural growth factors and, in turn, often utilized for both medical and aesthetic purposes. When plasma concentrate is isolated from whole blood and reintroduced into the body, PRP can regenerate stem cells and activate the growth of new collagen. Due to the healing properties of separated plasma, PRP can be incorporated into skin treatments to repair tissue damage and improve wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and a dull complexion, among many other concerns. PRP therapy at our practice is typically used in complement with microneedling to improve skin imperfections for smoother, healthier, and brighter skin.
What are the Benefits of PRP?
PRP can minimize the effects of aging by not only repairing facial tissue, but also by reviving new capillaries and collagen in the skin. In general, this rejuvenation can:
- Reduce wrinkles and fine lines
- Tighten loose, sagging skin
- Lighten the appearance of acne scars
- Minimize sun damage
- Improve dark circles under the eyes
- Enhance the overall tone and texture of skin
Since PRP therapy uses your own blood to heal skin cells, there is generally no risk of an allergic reaction. We will work with you to create the best treatment plan to achieve your desired results.
How is Treatment with PRP Performed?
During your appointment, a very small amount of blood is drawn and a special device will be used to separate plasma from your red blood cells. After the PRP solution is prepared, it is applied onto the skin to catalyze the cell regeneration process. PRP is often used in conjunction with treatments like microneedling to provide an extensive improvement in facial aging.
Microneedling with PRP
Microneedling is designed to activate the body’s wound-healing capabilities by creating thousands of tiny micro-perforations in the skin. When this process is assisted by PRP therapy, the results of microneedling can be amplified. Together, both treatments work to replenish healthy cells and achieve the growth of new collagen. This is one of the most common applications of PRP, as the growth factors in platelet-rich plasma can strengthen the restorative effects of microneedling.
At our medical spa, PRP microneedling is performed using the SkinPen®, the leading FDA-cleared handpiece for microneedling. Patients usually do not feel discomfort, although a topical numbing agent can be applied to the skin beforehand upon request. While some redness after treatment is normal, there is typically no downtime or recovery period.
How Much Does PRP Cost?
Treatments with PRP are priced according to the details of your unique treatment plan; therefore, the extent of your concerns and your overall goals will determine the cost of PRP. Once your needs are evaluated, our team will make sure you understand your personalized cost estimate as well as your various payment options. Some of these options include plastic surgery financing plans through CareCredit® and ALPHAEON™ Credit, two trusted lending institutions that can help qualified patients pay for their PRP treatment in low monthly installments.
